Werribee River Walking Trail Guide

The Werribee River has several walking areas, but a town-centre walk and a Werribee Gorge hike are different trips. For a local outing, start with Wyndham City’s shared paths through Wyndham Park and Chirnside Park. For the gorge, consult Parks Victoria’s route and safety information and travel separately toward Bacchus Marsh.

Which local route is easiest to plan?

Wyndham City lists a 2.6 km Wyndham Park loop to Bungies Hole. Its walking trails page also describes a roughly 5 km loop from Presidents Park toward Cottrell Street, using paths on both sides of the river. The Werribee CBD to Princes Freeway section passes through Wyndham Park and Chirnside Park. Check the current council map, signed access points and any closures before choosing a distance. Shared paths can include cyclists and other walkers.

Is Werribee Gorge part of the same trail?

No. Werribee Gorge State Park is near Bacchus Marsh, away from the town-centre trail. Parks Victoria lists a 5 km Short Circuit Walk taking around two hours and a 10 km Werribee Gorge Circuit Walk taking around four and a half hours. These are Grade 3 walks with uneven ground and steep sections. The main circuit has a 50 m cable handrail over high angle rock above the river, and the riverside section can become impassable after rain. Read the current Parks Victoria notes and weather forecast before attempting either route.

What about the lower river?

Werribee Park and Werribee South are separate destinations from the central river walk. Do not assume that a continuous public riverbank path links them. Use official maps and signed tracks, respect private land and check the destination’s access information before setting out. The Werribee South foreshore can be planned as its own visit.

How should you prepare?

For a short town walk, pick an entrance and distance suited to your group, weather and available daylight. Bring water and sun protection as needed. For the gorge, allow enough daylight and supplies for the full route, wear suitable footwear and follow Parks Victoria’s current safety advice. Avoid flooded or closed paths.

The practical choice is simple: use the council map for a local riverside loop, and treat Werribee Gorge as a separate bushwalk requiring more preparation.
